Hi Emily,

Sorry to have taken so long to respond to your question. WAIS Divide Field Camp is located in West Antarctica (kind of between the Antarctic Penisula and McMurdo). WAIS stands for the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. It's latitude and longitude is 79o28.058'S,...{read more}

life in antarctica

Hi Lydia,

Sorry to have taken so long to reply. I was never in any immediate danger while in Antarctica. One does have to be careful there though because the weather conditions can get bad really quickly and if a person is not prepared they could find themself in trouble. We also flew a...{read more}

Certainly

I checked with George, who is still in McMurdo. He said that there is no winter mail delivery. They used to do a mail drop (fly over and push it out). But with the advent of the Internet there is not the need or demand for that anymore.

Wintering in McMurdo

Yes people do winter at McmUrdo. While I was there I heard a wind range of numbers for how many people do winter over, I never did hear an official count, but it is somewhere around 200. I'm not sure about receiving mail. I'll see what I can find out.
